Here, between the Western and Eastern Scheldt, you will find Zuid Beveland. This region is best known for its beautifully blooming fruit trees, old villages and of course the fishing industry, mainly seafood. During this short cycle route, we would like to take you along the flavors of the Scheldt.

It is clear that Zeeland always has to do with water. You cycle past the Locks of Hansweert, boats make grateful use of the passage from the Western Scheldt to the Oosterschelde and vice versa all year round. You cycle along the Noordervoorhaven towards the mussel village of the Netherlands: Yerseke.

Yerseke, Kapelle, Wemeldinge

With this route you really get to know the eastern part of Zuid-Beveland. The Zeeland peninsula, which is wedged between the Oosterschelde and the Western Scheldt, has a rich history but has also seen many disasters.

In the Middle Ages, Zeeland was reclaimed and less and less land was flooded. The Zeeland clay turned out to be very suitable for agriculture and this is still reflected today. On this route you will find a fruit growing museum, several country shops and mills that still benefit from this.

The island has also experienced several floods. Everyone has heard of the 1953 flood disaster, but in 1530 during the St. Felix Flood, a large part of the island disappeared under the waves. You can see how people dealt with this and how the flourishing mussel and oyster trade came about in the Oosterschelde Museum in Yerseke.

Goes, Yerseke, Wemeldinge

Do you find history interesting and can’t get enough of beautiful views? Then this route is really something for you! While cycling you will pass various windmills and cycle through the impressive landscape of Zuid-Beveland in Zeeland.

In Wemeldinge you will pass the striking white Mill de Hoop. This is the oldest mill in Wemeldinge and dates from 1866. On Saturdays there is often a miller present and you can also take a look inside the mill. Goes once had 11 windmills, but only 1 of them remains. Mill de Koornbloem is a large mill from 1801 and is located close to the television tower. This view gives a unique picture of bygone and modern times side by side.

You won’t be bored during your ride from one drop-off point to the next, there is plenty to see! Extensive views, old farms and swampy water features alternate. Large parts of the route take you along the water of the Oosterschelde and the Westerschelde. One cycle path with a beautiful view over the water, the other path along a green dike with lively nature.
