From the pleasant Ouddorp you cycle towards the historic Goedereede. The place name is an old-fashioned word for ‘safe haven’, something that Goedereede used to be for many fishermen. In order to reach the trading town, the fishermen had to pass the infamous ‘Kwade Hoek’ with their boats. The current here was very unpredictable. The sandbanks along the coast moved continuously, causing many fishing boats to get stuck or even sink. The boats that survived the journey and managed to reach Goedereede were finally safe there.

To this day, De Kwade Hoek remains a dynamic nature reserve, where the brute force of the sea continues to shape the landscape.

Also visit the Goat Farm De Mèkkerstee, a fun place for the whole family! You will meet the cheerful goats and experience goat milking yourself. Be sure to stay a while to taste the artisanal, home-made products. How about a piece of goat cheese or a scoop of goat’s milk ice cream?

The Port may be small, but it is located on a beautiful nature reserve: the Kwade Hoek. Thanks to the salty soil, you will find many halophytes in this area, plant species that can withstand drought and oxygen-poor conditions. They can survive well in the salty soil. Species that you can encounter include sea asparagus, salt marsh grass, salt rush and beach couch. In the areas with more fresh water, you will see species such as floring grass, slender water rush and various orchids. Further into the dunes, the shrubs come into view more, such as sea buckthorn, privet and elder.

All these different types of vegetation attract many water birds. The mudflats and salt marshes are also attractions for various birds. Large grazers such as cows ensure that the vegetation is maintained. So don’t be surprised if you suddenly come face to face with a cow.

Ouddorp was named the best seaside resort in the Netherlands in 2007 and 2018. Reason enough to visit this village! In the cozy center you can go for a cup of coffee on a terrace, fresh fish and nice shops. It is also a popular place for kite surfers. A beautiful sight to see all those stunts when you cycle along the coast near Ouddorp. In the background you can see the island of Hompelvoet.

Between Stellendam and Havenhoofd lies the Deltahaven, where the cutters of Ouddorp, Goedereede and Stellendam have their home port. Cycle wonderfully through the dunes, over polders and along the beach. With this route you will experience a complete holiday within a few hours!
